About the Name LEKS
The word lex originates from Latin and means law. It is one of the oldest and most fundamental concepts in legal science and continues to serve as the foundation for many legal doctrines and terms, such as lex specialis, lex posterior, and lex loci.
In the classical Roman legal system, a distinction was drawn between lex and ius. Lex referred to enacted, formal law adopted by the people or by public authority, whereas ius encompassed law in a broader sense, including justice, general principles, and customary practice.
When a modern law firm adopts the name LEX, it therefore signals a firm and traditional connection to law itself — to that which confers authority and legitimacy upon the legal system.
The name LEKS is derived from the same Latin lex, but is uniquely adapted to the Faroese language, as the letter X does not exist in the Faroese alphabet. By using KS instead of X, the name becomes both distinctive and firmly rooted in the Faroese linguistic tradition, while at the same time preserving the Latin origin and its legal significance.
LEKS thus represents both law and justice, and a distinctly Faroese identity within an international legal context.
